How to Ask Someone for Support

Reaching out can be difficult, especially when you are not sure what would help.

Educational information, not a diagnosis or individualized treatment. Sample wording is optional and can be adapted.

Reaching out can be difficult, especially when you are not sure what would help. You may ask for company or practical assistance without explaining private experiences. You can also decide that a particular person is not the right person to approach.

A practical first step

Choose one person who generally respects your boundaries. Make a small, specific request: a phone call, a walk, help with an errand, or quiet company. Pick a time that works for both of you and leave room for the other person to say whether they can help.

Words you can use

Try: “I have had a hard week. Could we talk for ten minutes? I am not ready to discuss all the details; listening would help more than advice.” If you want practical help instead, try: “Could you help me make a plan for tomorrow?”

Choose the kind of support you want

Support can be emotional, practical, or simply shared time. Consider whether you want a person to listen without advice, accompany you to an appointment, help with a task, or check in later. You can set a limit on time or topics before beginning. One person need not meet every need, and a person may care but be unavailable at a particular moment.

If the first conversation does not help

You can redirect gently: “I appreciate that you want to help. Could we focus on listening rather than solutions for a few minutes?” If the person cannot respect your boundaries, end the conversation or choose another support. Make a short list of people and professional resources you can contact at different times; agree on a backup if someone is unavailable.

When more support may help

A friend can be important support but is not a substitute for care when you need professional help. If a conversation feels unsafe or boundaries are ignored, you may pause it and consider another source of support. In immediate danger, contact emergency services.
